Empire Lighting Resources, has completed the lighting retrofit for the 360,000 s.f. Pepperidge Farm, Inc. manufacturing plant located in Lakeland, FL. The energy savings initiative was the first for Pepperidge Farm which has nine production facilities throughout the United States.

The production area lighting consisted of 55% 458 watt high pressure sodium fixtures, 35% 455 watt metal halide and 10% 8′ fluorescent strip fixtures. All HID fixtures were replaced with 224 watt enclosed  Hi-Bay fixtures utilizing Empire Lighting Resources VIZ-A-LITE High Vision fluorescent lamps. All existing 75 watt 8′ T12 cool white fluorescent lamps using 30 watt magnetic ballasts were replaced with 59 watt 8′ T8 VIZ-A-LITE High Vision lamps using normal ballast factor  electronic ballasts. The result, an average of 52% energy savings per fixture and additionally, dramatic heat load reduction, while providing a tremendous improvement in light quality due to the increased CRI (color rendering index) caused by switching from the yellow tinted low CRI high pressure sodium lamps to the high CRI VIZ-A-LITE  lamps.

In the office areas throughout the facility, all existing 2, 3, and 4 lamp cool white T12 fixtures as well as the 3 and 4 lamp T8 fixtures were retrofitted to 2 lamp T8 fixtures using VIZ-A-LITE High Vision lamps, enhanced aluminum reflectors and normal ballast factor electronic ballasts. The result, an average energy savings of 65% with again, a much improved quality of light. Additionally, all appropriate areas of the plant had occupancy sensors installed to provide additional energy savings.

Estimated annual savings in reduced energy demand will exceed $116,000 with an additional $73,000 in EPACT tax credits.

Pepperidge Farm will reduce CO2 emissions by 1,412 tons per year as well as a reduction of over 5.3 tons in SO2. This is the environmental equivalent of planting 224 acres of trees or removing 197 automobiles from the road, saving of over 100,813 gallons of gasoline and reducing oil demand by 2,400 barrels of oil.

Continental Manufacturing was looking for ways to improve on their poor lighting while lowering their soaring energy costs. By using Viz-A-Lite High Vision fluorescent lamps, Empire Lighting Resources was able to reduce from 4 to 2 T8 lamps in each of the office ceiling fixtures. In the warehouse, they replaced 455 and 1080 watt metal halide fixtures with 192 and 256 watt hi-bay T8 fluorescent reflector fixtures and Viz-A-Lite High Vision fluorescent lamps. Although the warehouse was not air conditioned, the employees working conditions were greatly enhanced due to the reduction of heat discharged from the metal halides. Between the offices and the production/warehouse areas, Continental will save approximately $9,500 per year.

Southwestern Suppliers is a 50 year old wholesale supplier of construction materials to the commercial building trade. It currently employs over 80 people.

Their 36,784 sq. ft. was lit by 458 watt metal halide and high pressure sodium fixtures. The warehouse, however, was still inadequately lit causing issues with the shipping of wrong materials. There was also the desire to reduce the energy consumption as their electric bill grew.

The solution to both concerns were met with the installation of 192 watt 6-lamp Hi-Bay Reflector fixtures using Empire Lighting Resources Viz-A-Lite high vision fluorescent lamps.  The impact was immediate with the improved lighting dramatically reducing the number of mistakes on orders.  There was also a tremedous energy savings which is currently over $25,000 since the lighting was installed.

Southwestern Suppliers looks forward to implementing similar strategies for their additional locations.

Empire Lighting Resources recently completed a lighting retrofit for Carroll Tire Company’s 80,000 s.f. warehouse. Carroll’s primary light sources were from aging, energy consuming 458 watt metal halide fixtures, 300 watt incandescent fixtures and sky lights. As a result, the facility was grossly under lit, especially on cloudy days or when there was no sunlight. This problem was compounded by racking that is filled with black rubber tires which absorb light.

Empire Lighting resources provided a comprehensive lighting plan that provided significantly more light while not using excessive energy. Empire Lighting Resources used 8 lamp fluorescent Aisle Lighters with enhanced aluminum reflectors in the narrower aisles and 8 lamp Hi-Bay Reflector fixtures in the open areas. The installed fixtures all featured Empire Lighting Resources VIZ-A-LITE High Vision lamps.

The average energy savings will be approximately $4,700 per year, but more importantly, the facility is much brighter and Carroll Tire has happier and more productive employees.

Stone Medical Group, of Boca Raton, Florida was looking for a way decrease operational costs while increasing employee productivity. Empire Lighting Resources® proposed a combination of replacing the existing inefficient 458 watt metal halide fixtures in their warehouse with our energy-efficient 222 watt open high bay fixtures, retro-fitting the 64 watt U-bend fixtures to 30 watts and de-lamping the four lamp T8 fixtures to two lamp. Empire Lighting Resources® Viz-A-Lite® high vision lamps were used in all fixtures.

As a result, the lighting levels in the warehouse increased from an average of 2-3 foot candles to over 20. In the offices and common areas, foot candles increase over 30%. Overall, lighting savings were over 50%, saving Stone Medical an estimated $500.00 per month. Stone Medial Group was also able to take advantage of the U.S. Government EPACT program, which allows companies to write off a percentage of their energy-efficient projects in the same year. So, in addition to the energy savings, Stone will be able to write off almost 70% of the project cost.

Empire Lighting Resources® recently completed an energy-efficient lighting upgrade at the Coral Springs Christian Academy’s gymnasium.

Coral Springs Christian was dealing with high energy costs and inefficient lighting levels. Empire Lighting Resources® designers came up with a new lighting layout for the gym. We removed 48 458 watt metal halide fixtures and replaced them with only 36 222 watt high-bay fixtures with enhanced Miro4 reflectors. The reduction of fixtures was made possible by using our Viz-A-Lite® high vision T8 lamps which are 70% brighter than standard T8 lamps.

The result of the upgrade gave the gymnasium 50% more foot candles, better visibility and a 64% reduction in energy. Additional savings were achieved due to reduced heat load. Metal halide fixtures operate at over 200 degrees, the new high bays, slightly above ambient temperature. All told, monthly savings are estimated to be almost $900.00 per month.

As a side note, the operations manager told us shortly after the completion of the upgrade that their teams, playing under the new lights, had won seven straight games. Sounds like a real home court advantage, on the court and in the accounting office!

This existing, Pump It Up, franchise was suffering from being severely under-lit.  Customers had complained how dark and shadowy it was in many areas of the main play arenas.  Ownership learned that several customers had decided to go to other, more distant, locations because of this condition.  The loss of revenue became noticeable.  The client was using 250 watt metal halide and 8′ 2-lamp strip fixtures.

Empire Lighting Resources implemented a lighting plan that brought the arenas up to the lighting standards required by the corporate office, while saving the owner energy dollars. All metal halide fixtures were replaced with 6-lamp hi-bay reflector fixtures using Viz-A-Lite High Vision fluorescent lamps.  The 8′ strip fixtures were repositioned and retrofitted with both an enhanced aluminum reflector and Viz-A-Lite High Vision fluorescent lamps to better utilize the light.  This dramatically changed the brightness of the arenas, eliminating the shadowing and dark areas.  This was all accomplished with a 20% energy reduction.

In the non-arena areas ELR took the 2 x 4 lay-in fixtures from 4 lamps to 2 lamps per fixture using Viz-A-Lite High Vision fluorescent lamps. This resulted in a 50% energy reduction.
